Like most people, you probably have a drawer or a box in the top of a closet full of old hardware. An iPod, a dot matrix printer, an old Nintendo 64. No? Maybe it’s just me.
Those bits of old tech were either cast aside when a newer, better replacement came along. Or they just stopped working. But, then again, they didn’t cost hundreds of thousands of dollars and have the whole backbone of a company riding on them.
Almost every business is facing down a future avalanche of ‘old tech’ as their bought-and-paid-for servers and hardware reach end-of-life.
Goodbye Forklift Upgrades…
Forklift upgrades are going out of style, with both in-house and colocated equipment being quickly set aside for cloud and an army of virtual servers. While purchasing and managing your own servers is still a valid option, it comes with it the challenge of identifying the right equipment, making a costly up-front investment, configuring the new hardware, and supporting it — all with the knowledge that, years from now, you’re going to be facing this same problem all over again. Still, many IT professionals do not look forward to the cloud transition with relish.
It’s a whole process. Most providers don’t do colo and cloud at the same time, so you’ve got to write an RFP, find and vet a new vendor, figure out what kind of an arm and a leg it’s going to cost you to slowly decommission your own servers and move their applications and resources to the cloud.
Not to mention the delightfully technical process of dialing in the hypervisor settings — virtual servers don’t run themselves, and you always forget what a pain initial setups are until you find yourself about 10 hours past your initial time estimate.
…Hello Integrated Solutions
Just a few years ago, the concept of hybrid cloud was almost science fiction. The interface, the security concerns — it sounded like a pie in the sky theory. But the cost-savings were too much to ignore, and eventually, even the headaches stopped being such a big deal.
This is where we are now with integrated solutions. Colo and cloud. Network services baked right in. And managed services supporting it all. It took some time to get it right, but now that it’s here, this is (in our humble opinion) THE solution to end-of-life cycle hardware concerns.
With Atlantic Metro’s CloudDirect Suite, as soon as one of your colocated servers needs replacing, you can quickly and easily port it into one of our cloud servers. As painless a transition as you could hope for. No more RFPs. No more juggling vendors.
